Teign Village winning run continues with an 8-1 victory over Bishopsteignton United.
On the back of an emphatic 3-1 victory at local rivals Chudleigh Athletic 3rds last weekend, The Quarrymen welcomed Bishopsteignton United to Valley Park. A few injuries forced manager Ian Chegwin to make some changes to the starting XI. Jim Nolan in for the injured Gavin Baker, Callum Duggan dropping into the back 3 for the injured Chris Towell and Jamie Chegwin returned after recovering from Covid.

Bishops won the toss and decided to swap ends with Village kicking the game off. A slow start by the home side giving possession away very cheaply on a number of occasions and very nearly going behind early on, but for the post. Village then had their own chance to take the lead, a fantastic cross by Nolan was met by the head of Turner, who guided the ball into the back of the net, only for the lineman to flag for offside, a controversial decision which riled the village skipper. Soon after Village found themselves in the lead, a ball played into Turner saw him fouled in the Bishops penalty after which gave referee Paul Edwards no choice but to award a penalty to the home side. Matt Bojar stepped up and blasted the ball into the back of the net. 1-0 Village.
This was the turning point in the game, it saw village step up and begin to the control possession. Some fantastic pass and move football saw them double their lead, Nolans cross over the head of everyone, including the bishops keeper and into back of net. 2 goals in 2 games for Nolan!! Village continued to press and grew stronger as the half went on, the village back 3 of Kelly, Smith and Duggan looked comfortable in possession and drove the team further into the opposition’s half. The home team soon found a third, Duggan received the ball inside his own half and ran through the middle of bishops midfield and found a fantastic pass into Stephenson who managed to get a shot away, unfortunately saved by the bishops keeper, a save which fell into the path Chegwin who fired into the empty net. 3-0 at half time.
Bishops kicked off the second half and began the stronger of the two sides, they pressed village and soon found the back of the net. A poorly defended corner saw the ball fall to the feet of a bishop’s player who drove the ball past Jack Beer. Still carrying a knock from last weeks game Tom Beer was replaced in the 65th minute by debutant Adam Fay who made an immediate impact, a ball in the air saw Fay flick the ball into the path of Turner who slotted the ball home to make it 4-1. Another change for Village, Ben Johnson on for Jim Nolan.
Village were calm in defence and fended off any likelihood of bishops scoring a second, they controlled possession and played some great football across the park. The ball found its way to Stephenson who put the ball through to Turner who turned the defender inside onto his left foot and struck the ball into the back of the net to make it 5-1. Villages 3rd change saw Ryan Dodd replace Craig Stonelake, this change saw village revert back to a 4-4-2 to see the game out. Duggan, now at left back continued to press out from the back and another solo run through the bishops midfield saw him get on the score sheet with a fantastic 20 yard strike into the bottom corner to make it 6-1. A confident village were not done yet, some more great football and a great cross from Kelly gave a debut goal for Adam Fay, 7-1!!
A deflated Bishops continued to try and find another goal in the final few minutes, they pressed into the village penalty area and after a few scrappy tackles and poor clearances, Stephenson dribbled the ball out and picked out a great pass for Turner to run onto, with his blistering pace he was away from the only bishop defender and through 1v1, a shot which saw the bishop keeper get a touch to but the pace of the shot taking it into the back of the net to make it 8-1 and a hat-trick for village Skipper
